On Eye of the Needle, I think Eric is a little unfair to the vibe of the episode. I think it makes sense that a this stage they’re all antsy for the quick way home in a way that will be less true in a year/season from now when they’ve settled in to their new lives on the ship.
Re: Tuvok, I read an interview with Tim Russ once where he said he felt free to be a little more emotionally expressive than Nimoy (particularly his irritation with Neelix). His thought (which I agree with) is that, as a full-blooded Vulcan, Tuvok never had the fundamental insecurity about his Vulcan identity that Spock did (or, say, Worf about his Klingon identity). So if he wasn’t perfectly emotionless every day, well, nobody’s perfect. Whereas with Spock, such a minor slip would be seen — by himself and by the bullies from his childhood memories — as proof that he was inferior to “real” Vulcans. Anyway, I really like Russ in the role.
